The Chancellor has today highlighted the challenges of securing a US-UK trade deal while underlining the importance of removing trade barriers between Britain and the EU.
Speaking at the MakeUK conference today Rachel Reeves said there is “every reason to be hopeful” for improving trading conditions between the US and the UK but that it would “not be an easy thing to secure”
The Chancellor went on to highlight the need to remove trade barriers between the UK and the EU to help cut red tape for British businesses.
Landmark research commissioned by Best for Britain and undertaken by Frontier Economics found that the UK Government can secure significant growth (1.7% to 2.2%) through a common sense deal with the EU, more than double the last government’s best estimates for a UK-US trade deal.
Recent polling by Best for Britain shows that prioritising trade with the EU is the most popular choice in every constituency in the UK
Naomi Smith Chief Executive of Best for Britain said,
"It will be a relief to businesses across the UK to hear the Chancellor stating in no uncertain terms that we need to get a better deal on trade with our nearest neighbours, to cut Brexit red tape and help them grow.
“Our polling shows that the British public want the Government to prioritise Europe, and independent research suggests this will give a far greater economic boost to Britain than any deal with Trump, which itself becomes less attractive by the hour.”
