“Like driving with the handbrake on”: PM must tackle trade barriers to increase disposable income

Starmer promises that under his Government Brits will have more money in their pockets.

This morning the Prime Minister pledged that British households will personally feel the benefit of the Government's attempts to drive more economic growth by the end of this Parliament.

This was the first of six milestone pledges that Starmer made to 'galvanise' his government. Others included clean power by 2030 and cutting NHS waiting lists.

Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain said.

“Tory trade barriers with the EU increased average annual shopping bills by £250, so trying to increase disposable income without making trade easier is like driving with the handbrake on.

“Any effort to bring down the cost of living must start with making trade easier by negotiating beneficial regulatory alignment with the EU. Starmer's reset of the relationship can't come a moment too soon for businesses and consumers alike."
