As reports emerge that the Secretary of State for Business and Trade is replacing members of the UK Board of Trade, campaigners call for complete overhaul.
It has today been reported that Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, is replacing government advisers to the UK Board of Trade ahead of Labour's flagship investment summit.
A new and independent UK Board of Trade, to act for the Department for Trade and Business as the OBR does for the Treasury, is one of Best for Britain's key recommendations.
Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain said,
“Since its resurrection by the Tories in 2017, the UK Board of Trade has been a cheerleader for often damaging government trade policy, rather than delivering impartial assessments of trade performance, scrutiny of new trade deals and advice on how this key driver of growth can be improved.
“Revamping the Board of Trade’s remit and composition is a welcome and essential first step in what should be a total overhaul of what the UK Board of Trade is for and how it operates, as originally recommended by our UK Trade and Business Commission."
