Bring compassion back into politics

This Government has now passed the inhumane Nationality and Borders Act. The Act will weaken protections for refugees and will allow the UK to take a much harsher line towards victims of modern slavery and trafficking. This Act is not fit for a responsible or fair society.

But instead of seeking to rectify what it has done, the Government wants to go further. New legislation expected in the coming Parliamentary session will increase the number of deportations we see in the UK. The rights conferred upon asylum seekers by the EU could be severely rolled back. We are entering a new era where hostility is the default - and cruelty is its ultimate manifestation.

We will continue to campaign tirelessly against these nativist and cruel policies. An open and inclusive world rightly should see wealthier countries play their part. The ills of the wider world will only rebound upon us if we do not help now. The Government knows this when it comes to providing military aid to the Ukrainians, but it won’t adopt the same open policies when it comes to Ukrainian refugees, continuing to impose challenging visa restrictions upon them. Refugees from elsewhere are in an even worse position with regards to entry to the UK, with barely any legal routes and sanctions imposed upon them if they enter by a small boat crossing.

Will you play your part in the campaign and urge the Government to recognise its international obligations towards refugees? This isn’t just about compassion - it’s also about the stability of the world at large and the security of this country too. Ignoring a crisis will not make that crisis go away.

The Government must take action today by opening up accessible, safe and legal routes for refugees from around the world to enter the UK.

Urge the Government to open up these routes and fulfil its duties by signing the petition.
