Ask union leaders to support proportional representation

After more than a decade of Conservative Government, the NHS is at breaking point.

In an emergency, people face an average wait of over 5 hours in A&E and more than an hour for an ambulance.

1 in 10 people are currently waiting for treatment including for serious conditions like cancer.

60% of nurses are considering changing their careers.

And this is not just because of the pandemic. In 2019, average waiting times in A&E reached more than 5 hours. Dedicated NHS staff are doing more and more with less and less. Doctors and nurses are working dangerously long hours. It is a risk to their health and the health of those they care for.

After 12 years in power, this Conservative Government has failed to address the crisis. They have made it worse by undermining our economy, wasting public money and depriving the NHS of skilled workers. If the Conservatives remain in power, it could be too late to save our NHS after another five years.

Hassan can't wait. Something must change.

Our outdated voting system keeps the Tories in power with a minority of votes. If the share of seats matched the share of votes they received, the Conservatives would have only won 2 of the last 21 elections. Even Margaret Thatcher would have failed to secure a majority.

The Conservative Party knows that they can’t win under a better system. That’s why this year they rolled back fairer voting for local elections in England. A better voting system means Labour is likely to be in government more often and in a position to help people like Hassan. 80% of Labour members back a fairer voting system as does Britain’s largest trade union.

End minority rule in Britain. Sign our letter calling on Union leaders to support Proportional Representation at this year’s Labour Party Conference.

Dear General Secretaries,

The last twelve years of Conservative government have been catastrophic for our economy and public services.

While more and more people are being pushed into poverty and millions are struggling with a cost of living crisis, the Conservative Government has wasted an estimated £64billion of public money while awarding lucrative public contracts to Tory party insiders. They have personally broken the law themselves.

But our outdated voting system keeps the Conservative Party in power with a minority of votes. Right-wing parties worked together to win the last two elections and in 2019, they got 56% of the seats with around 40% of the vote. If the share of seats matched the share of votes they received, the Conservatives would have only won 2 of the last 21 elections. Even Margaret Thatcher would have failed to secure a majority.
