Government to reverse Conservative gerrymander of mayoral elections

Campaigners have welcomed a new bill published by the government today will aim to reinstate a fairer system of voting for Mayoral elections.

If passed, the bill will reverse the introduction of first past the post voting in elections for Mayoral and Police & Crime Commissioners

Best for Britain campaigned against the last government's Elections Act which changed the rules, making it easier for right wing candidates to win with a minority of votes, as more progressive voters are usually split between more parties.

At this year's Mayoral elections, both of Reform UK's successful candidates were elected on a minority of votes.

Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain said,

“This is a very welcome move that seeks to undo the gerrymander of mayoral elections by the last Conservative government who changed the rules to make it easier for right wing candidates to win with a minority of votes.

“What’s good for the goose is good for the gander, and the logical next step now is to introduce a proportionate system for national elections.”
