Campaigners have welcomed the first official meeting between the Prime Minister and the President of the European Commission.
Keir Starmer met Ursula von der Leyen for talks in Brussels today, with Sir Keir promising to offer “pragmatic, sensible leadership” as he pushed for a reset in the UK-EU relationship.
A joint statement following the meeting confirmed that they will meet again in the coming weeks, with a plan for regular EU-UK summits at leader level beginning in early 2025.
Tom Brufatto, Director of Policy and Research at Best for Britain said,
"“Agreeing to hold regular leader-level summits marks a welcome first step towards improving UK-EU relations, and demonstrates just how important the relationship reset is to both sides.
“A clear commitment to respecting each other’s procedures and institutions will also go a long way towards rebuilding trust, and provides a clear break from many years of acrimony and confrontation.”
