Stop the inhumane Nationality and Borders Bill

We challenge the Government to immediately change direction on the Nationality and Borders Bill.

The Bill disregards international law, targets ethnic minorities and others as second-class British citizens and does not live up to the great British traditions of openness, tolerance and fairness.

Sign the petition today.

This Nationality and Borders Bill, championed by Home Secretary Priti Patel, includes:

  • A proposal to allow the Home Secretary to strip British people of their citizenship without notifying or warning them. This could leave people stateless and without the knowledge to appeal this decision. This could happen to anyone the government believes is eligible for another country’s citizenship - regardless of whether they even have dual citizenship already, or have ever visited the other country. This clearly would impact minority groups disproportionately.
  • A clause which would criminalise entering the UK without a visa. Generally, refugees need to enter a country before seeking asylum there - and this is a legally recognised process internationally. What the UK Government is attempting to do is essentially criminalise seeking asylum. Despite the very obvious fact that when people are fleeing danger or persecution they rarely have the chance to get their paperwork just right.
  • Proposals to offshore asylum seekers while their claims are processed. We already know the shocking conditions in which many asylum applicants are housed inside the UK - how can we hope that offshore processing centres will cater to the needs of these very vulnerable people? And how much harder will it be for applicants to receive adequate legal advice and access to UK Courts?
  • Those who assist asylum seekers for no personal gain could be criminalised and face lengthy prison terms.

This is not a bill for modern Britain. Britain is and has always been a melting pot for people from all walks of life, from all around the world. That is part of what makes our country great. If we harden our hearts and criminalise compassion towards others while treating millions of Britons as if they are second class citizens and liable to be removed, then we fundamentally damage the principles on which this country relies for its international reputation.

Sign the petition now and tell Priti Patel and the Government that their plan for our country is not the right path. Tell them to change direction immediately.
