Voter ID: Government must go further to expand list for young Brits

Campaigners call on the Government to further expand the list of acceptable forms of voter ID, as it approves Veteran Cards.

It has today been announced that the list of acceptable forms of voter ID will be changed to include the Veterans ID card. The decision comes as part of an ongoing review into the country’s voter ID policy.

Best for Britain campaigned against voter ID legislation when the Elections Bill (2021-22) was going through Parliament and managed to get some of the worst bits removed like new joining campaign rules.

Cal Roscow, Director of Campaigns at Best for Britain said,

“Adding Veteran Cards to the list of acceptable forms of voter ID goes some way to fixing the unjustifiably arbitrary rules introduced by the last government.

“But it fails to address the disproportionately limited choice of ID that young people can take to the polling station. We urge the Government to go further by adding student cards and young people’s travel passes to the list of accepted identification.”
