Today the Government will introduce a motion to allow Veteran's cards to be used as identification to vote during elections.
New voter ID requirements were introduced by the last government but received widespread criticism for permitting multiple forms of ID for older people and relatively few for younger voters with student IDs and young persons travelcards deemed invalid forms of ID.
Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of campaign group Best for Britain said,
“This is a progressive move to help more voters participate in elections but it is clear that the last Government sought to disenfranchise young people through their arbitrary choice of acceptable ID, exposed in their permitting a 60+ oyster card but not those for people aged 18+.
“The new Government must remedy this attempt at voter suppression and increase the forms of acceptable ID, to include things like student cards and young persons’ travelcards”.
