Youth Mobility Scheme

Since the UK left the EU, routes for mobility between the UK and our closest neighbours and allies have disappeared.

That's why we propose a reciprocal youth mobility scheme between the UK and EU for 18-35 year olds for a period of up to 5 years.

What do we recommend?

Best for Britain supports the independent UK Trade and Business Commission's 114 recommendations to the UK Government - current and future - which are intended to boost the UK's trading relationships around the world, including:

  • The UK should negotiate bilateral and reciprocal youth mobility visa schemes with individual EU Member States. These schemes would allow young people between the ages of 18 and 35 to travel and work in both the UK and EU member states for up to five years.
  • The UK should review the uptake and implementation of the visa scheme on an annual basis, evaluating the number of young people taking up the scheme and identifying any trends or patterns in the types of industries or sectors they are working in.
  • The review should identify any barriers to the uptake of the visa scheme, such as high fees or health levies, and take steps to address these barriers.

MRP Analysis: A UK-EU Youth Mobility Scheme

We commissioned YouGov to poll almost 15,000 people in Great Britain on whether they support or oppose the UK and EU agreeing to a Youth Mobility Scheme to allow 18-30 year olds to move between and work or study in the UK and EU. The poll found an overwhelming majority want the UK Government to work with the EU to increase the ability of young people to travel and work. Every constituency in Great Britain is predicted by the MRP analysis to favour supporting both lengths of YMS.
