Secure British Standards

We want Britain to have high food standards, high environmental standards, the best opportunities for trade and the strongest system of accountability in Parliament

The Government is introducing a new “Brexit Freedoms Bill”. But this has nothing to do with freedom.

As it always has, Brexit is being used as a means of drumming up populist sentiment and distracting from Government failures. The new freedoms bill proposes to outline how best to take advantage of our “freedom” to dismantle EU regulations - but what it essentially amounts to is an ambition to lower standards and weaken opportunity in exchange for a semblance of sovereignty.

The PM claims that the Brexit bill will help the UK cut red tape. He claims that it will allow us to improve infrastructure and ‘level-up’ the country. He claims that it will enable us to set leading environmental standards.

But the PM’s Brexit appears to be a cover for doing exactly the opposite of what he claims. Red tape has appeared where it never was before, with import/export businesses burdened by new administrative requirements. “Levelling up” is patently not happening - infrastructure promises have been scaled back, lower and middle income earners are being hit highest by tax rises and the cost of living is getting out of control. The Government’s promise of a “shared prosperity fund” to invest in poorer regions is undermined by evidence that it has failed to replace lost EU development funding. And on the environment? Well, the Government seems to be keener to lower standards rather than set them.

Leaving the EU does mean that Britain can depart from the rules and regulations that it once subscribed to. But in departing from the rules, it appears that our PM is choosing to make worse ones. And what could possibly be the point in that?

We don’t want this Brexit bonfire of our rights and standards. We want smooth trade with our neighbours and international partners, we want a fair society with comfortable standards of living, we want commitments to the highest standards across the environment and animal welfare.

But we’re getting none of these.

Sign our petition today and tell the PM that Brexit must not be used to tear up our rights and freedoms and disadvantage our people for the sake of delivering on a false ideal.
