LEVELLING UP MUST BE MORE THAN AN EMPTY SLOGAN

Britain is hurtling towards a winter of discontent. With this Government in the driver’s seat, we shouldn’t be surprised if we get nothing better than a trainwreck.

The Government touts its ‘flagship’ levelling-up policy on every occasion - but nobody knows what it actually means. For now, it’s just a lot of hot air - a gaping hole where a real plan for strengthening this country into the future should exist.

Sign now to tell the Government you won't tolerate more failure.

This Government has form when it comes to not planning ahead. British people are being assaulted by a cost of living crisis, with prices rocketing and inflation putting pressure on pockets. But the Government has no plan for how to fix that. In fact, it’s made it worse by cutting Universal Credit and proposing National Insurance rises which will hit low and middle-income workers hardest.

And look at how the Government has handled the energy crisis. By not planning for long-term sustainable energy sources, the Government has failed to protect us from shocks in the volatile global fossil fuels market - leaving British customers uniquely vulnerable to skyrocketing prices.

The Government has done exactly the same with Brexit negotiations, committing to all sorts of promises it never had any intention of keeping. This reckless and short-sighted approach risks exposing Britons to more economic hardship. That’s on top of the current supply chain crisis which has been made worse in Britain by this Government’s failure to face up to the reality of HGV drivers leaving the UK and the profession in droves. And don’t get us started on its handling of Covid.

The Government offers lip-service reassurances at every turn, but these ring hollow when we see the reality that confronts us. The reality is our society is in a health, economic, social and environmental crisis. Failing to plan is a plan to fail.

Covid case numbers are rising fast, and so we expect more hospitalisations, more deaths, more cases of long-Covid - more pressure on our NHS. But instead of learning the lessons from 2020 and taking quick action, the Government is sacrificing our longer-term prospects of freedom by allowing case numbers to run out of control. Does this feel like Deja vu to you?

Add your name and call for the Government to take responsibility and take real action now.

The Government is blaming everybody but itself for these crises. Businesses suffering the fallout of a bad Brexit are blamed for supply chain disruption and labour shortages that are out of their control. People who have not been called yet for their booster vaccine are being condemned for not having got one. People who can’t afford to turn the heating up are told to put on a jumper.

Where is the responsibility? Where is the accountability? All we get from this Government are slogans and scapegoats - while the prospect of genuinely bringing prosperity to people around Britain diminishes by the day.

Do you think this Government’s sloganeering in the face of multiple crises is unacceptable? Show them they have to change course by signing our petition today, and call on them to take responsibility and make some plans. That would be a start.
