Closure of Bibby Stockholm must signal the end of “government by gimmick”

The Government has confirmed that they will close the controversial Bibby Stockholm barge by January next year.

The barge was introduced by the Conservative Government as an alternative to keeping asylum seekers and refugees in hotels while they failed to clear the massive backlog of claimants.

However, the plan was roundly criticised for being more expensive and providing intolerable living conditions.

Last year, a man forced to stay on the barge took his own life.

Naomi Smith, CEO of internationalist campaign Best for Britain said,

“Like the Rwanda plan, the Bibby Stockholm was a symbol of everything wrong with the last Government’s approach to asylum, prioritising performative cruelty over effective policy and value for the taxpayer.

“This must signal the end of government by gimmick and that the UK will once again lead by example in protecting human rights and the rules based international system.”
