Molly Scott Cato praises EU on World Environment Day

Michael Gove has attempted to morph Brexit into Green Brexit. He is a lone voice in government and within his own Party where Brextremists are eager to tear up EU environmental legislation, sign up to new trade deals with lower health and animal welfare standards and have our environmental regulations policed by a toothless watchdog.

For four decades, the muscle when it comes to environmental protection has always been shown by the EU, and often in opposition to our own government. The fact the government has been referred to the European Court of Justice over its consistent failure to meet EU air quality standards is a case in point.

It is clear that remaining in the single market, or much better the EU, is the surest way to protect our environment and prevent the UK becoming once again the dirty man of Europe.
