The Better Democracy Fund

UPDATE - 21st July 2023

On 20th July 2023 the Government faced a huge electoral test - three by-elections on the same day, all in seats recently vacated by Conservative MPs. The Liberal Democrats took Somerton & Frome with a significant majority and Labour secured a convincing win in Selby and Ainsty, both overturning massive Conservative majorities to do so and clear evidence in both constituencies of tactical voting as voters switched to the winning party.

The third by-election though, in Uxbridge and South Ruislip recently held by Boris Johnson, was a narrow win for the Conservatives of just over 400 votes. The Tory margin of victory was smaller than the combined votes of the Lib Dems and Green candidates - so if there had been an agreement between those parties and Labour this could have been another loss for the Government.

The complacency that has crept in over the last few months, caused by repeated Westminster polls showing large Labour leads, could cost progressives the next general election - and win Sunak a second term.

Last night was a warning. Let us make sure that this is the last warning. It certainly hasn’t been the first.

UPDATE - 9th November 2022

In 2022, the Government pushed through several new laws giving them more power to limit the freedoms of ordinary people and act with even less accountability. With your support we got some of the worst provisions in these laws removed but despite this, we are already seeing the consequences.

Peaceful protesters are serving prison sentences, journalists have been arrested for reporting on them, vulnerable people are being held in disease-ridden detention centres and in three months we have had three different Prime Ministers without a general election.

We are campaigning for a general election as soon as possible and the election of a more internationalist government that will deliver a fairer voting system. Until then, we will continue to work against the erosion of our democracy.

The Government is progressing even more legislation that aims to break international law and reduce standards and protections for everyone in the UK. Don’t let them get away with it. Donate to our Better Democracy Fund and join the fight against this attack on democracy in the UK.

UPDATE - 24th June 2022

The Conservatives lost TWO by-elections in one night, only because Labour and the Lib Dems made it clear to voters they were each targeting only one of the seats each. Voters in Tiverton & Honiton were told to vote tactically for the Lib Dems and in Wakefield they were told to tactically vote for Labour.

It worked! But Labour and the Lib Dems mustn’t rest on their laurels, repeating this success will be much more difficult in a General Election. Our polling proves they will need to collaborate to defeat the Government.

Labour, Liberal Democrats AND the Green Party need to make a real pact to work together if they hope to remove this government at the next election. Donate to the Fund now so we can get them on the right track and prepare for the General Election we know is coming.

UPDATE - 6th June 2022

The Prime Minister has won a confidence vote in his leadership by 211 votes to 148, taking 59% of the vote. He's been wounded, but clings to power.

This country needs leaders we can trust, be proud of, and who can give our trading relationship with Europe the impetus we so desperately need.

Our broken system continues to keep this divided Government in power, but with no vision for the country. It is essential that opposition parties work together at the next election to remove this Government.”

Conservative MPs have challenged Boris Johnson's leadership and he now faces a vote of no confidence. Despite enough Tory backbenchers privately growing a backbone, Johnson may well win the confidence vote and even if he is removed, his successor will still be tarnished by the corruption, scandal and economic vandalism that defines this Government. A general election could be upon us sooner than expected.

Now more than ever, the UK needs leaders we can trust, be proud of and who can give our trading relationship with Europe the shot in the arm we so desperately need.

But our broken system keeps the Tories in power on a minority of votes, so opposition parties must work together at the next election to remove this government.
