UK-EU alignment key to upholding falling standards

Campaigners urge alignment with EU standards, as analysis reveals the amount of pesticide residue allowed on British food has soared since Brexit.

It has been revealed that changes to regulations in Britain mean that more than 100 items are now allowed to carry more pesticides when sold to the public than previously under EU regulations. This includes a range of everyday goods from potatoes, onions, and rice to grapes, tea and coffee.

Best for Britain is campaigning for beneficial alignment with the EU on regulations and standards to unblock trade, get the economy growing, and ensure the UK’s high standards are upheld.

Tom Brufatto, Director of Policy at Best for Britain said,

“Previous Conservative governments used Brexit as an opportunity to race to the bottom on food standards and environmental protections, but divergence from our European neighbours has only increased costs for businesses and consumers alike.

“The new government has the opportunity to put an end to this trend. Aligning with high EU standards where beneficial will not only protect the wellbeing of our population and environment, but boost the economy too.”
