UK-EU summit welcome news - and PM must maximise moment

Campaigners welcome announcement that the second UK-EU Summit will take place in Brussels on 22 July 2026 and call on the Prime Minister to "make the most of this moment".

A decade on from the Brexit referendum, the second UK-EU Summit is a vital opportunity for both parties to assess the progress made in implementing the agreements reached last May and to continue improving collaboration between the UK and the European Union.

Commenting on the news that the UK and the European Union (EU) will hold their next summit on July 22, Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain, which campaigns for closer UK-EU ties and has polled how advocating for the UK’s EU membership can galvanise support for progressive parties, said:

“After more than a year negotiating youth mobility, agrifood and electricity trading deals, against a backdrop of wars and tariffs, it’s welcome news that the UK and our European partners will get back around the table this summer - but we must make the most of this moment.

“Whoever is in No10 in July must recognise the increasing importance of our friends and allies in the EU, the significant economic gearchange that just signalling an intention to pursue membership would generate, and the progressive political consensus that underpins it.”
