New Prime Minister must set a different course and deliver for public

Economic growth and an amibitious plan for the future must be top priority for next PM, campaigners stress.

Following months of pressure to step aside, Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as Prime Minister and Leader of the Labour Party. The National Executive Committee will now set out a timetable for a Labour leadership contest, with nominations opening on 9 July. Nominations will close before the summer parliamentary recess, on 16 July, to ensure there is a new Labour leader by the time parliament returns in September.

Naomi Smith, Chief Executive at Best for Britain, said:

“We will soon have had seven prime ministers in ten years, all while dealing with declining living standards fuelled by a stagnant economy and rapid inflation: that’s families struggling with the cost of living, workers in industries damaged by trade barriers, and communities ignored by Westminster.

“The public is exhausted by politics that serves itself. Any new Prime Minister must show they understand that, be ambitious for the future of our country and deliver genuine economic improvement."
