UK-EU alignment step in right direction but urgent progress essential

Ministers must make urgent progress on a "common sense food and drink deal" with the EU, campaigners have urged.

It came as the UK government confirmed areas where the UK will align with EU legislation amid ongoing negotiations for an SPS (sanitary and phytosanitary) deal to cut costs for consumers.

The list from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) included areas such as: food and feed safety; food supplements; nutrition and health claims; food labelling; and regulation of pesticides and biocides.

Naomi Smith, Chief Executive of Best for Britain, said:

“This is a hugely welcome step in the right direction: towards faster and easier trade with our largest market; cheaper prices at the supermarket checkout; and a sorely needed boost to the whole UK economy.

“As Best for Britain has long argued, ministers must not simply make urgent progress on this common sense food and drink deal, but on extending alignment to all industrial service sectors to get growth kickstarted both here and in the EU.”
