Labour's Kim Leadbeater won the by-election in Batley & Spen yesterday by just 323 votes. While this is a great result for internationalists and progressives it should also be a lesson to all the parties that want to replace Boris Johnson's government at the next general election. Winning is possible, but it will take cooperation to do it.

Other countries around Europe have extended deadlines to help British citizens who find themselves in a similar position. The Government should follow suit to end the undue stress this is causing and improve communication with those who have submitted their applications.

The only reason the Government would refuse to do this, is if their real goal is to reduce our food and animal welfare standards in order to secure deals with countries like the USA.

People will also be rightly sceptical of this government’s ability to deliver ‘value for the taxpayer’ when they’ve blown billions on an ineffective response to Covid and have a habit of giving public money to their mates. The Government don’t need new legislation to support SMEs which employ 60% of all working people in the UK. They must significantly increase the budget of the SME support fund and publish a strategy to support SME trade.
